This sketch and painting were inspired by J Cole's song,
"Crooked Smile"
Lyrics:
"You wake up, put makeup on, stare in the mirror;
But it's clear that you can't face what's wrong.
No need to put what God already put his paintbrush on;
Your roommate yelling, 'why you gotta take so long?"
What it's like to have a crooked smile"
Connecting with song lyrics and expressing through art that while substances and cosmetic makeup may put a mask on that can allow us to face the world in a certain/easier way, we still have to face ourselves in the mirror.
The paint brush from the sky is a reminder that the masks we wear aren’t really who/how we were created to be.
We find ourselves as we grow into understanding of the concept that we are God’s creation; a work of His paintbrush.
Like the song ends:
“But like the sun, know you know I found my way back ‘round”
